Saturday night’s IBBA banquet will be highlighted by a great meal, new and old friends and acquaintances and will culminate in a fantastic key note presentation by an old friend to us all (sorry about the old part there John). John Tautin, retired Chief of the Bird Banding Laboratory, will entertain us with his presentation on “A Look Back at 108 Years of Bird Banding in North America”.

About John . . .

John Tautin is a native of Northwestern Pennsylvania where growing up on a dairy farm put him in close touch with the outdoors and instilled a life-long interest in wildlife and the environment.   He earned a B.S degree in Zoology from the Pennsylvania State University in 1969, served two years in the US Army, and then returned to college to earn a M.S. degree in Wildlife Science from Utah State University.  In 1974 he joined the US Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service at Laurel, MD for a career in migratory bird conservation.  During his career, he held a variety of staff and administrative positions at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and at the Washington, D.C. headquarters office of the Service.  In his last position with Interior, John was Chief of the U.S. Bird Banding Laboratory.

In 2002, John retired from federal service and returned to Northwestern PA where he quickly became involved in local and regional conservation efforts. Among other ornithological endeavors, he currently serves as Executive Director of the Purple Martin Conservation Association and is on the council of the Eastern Bird Banding Association.
