9th -
Hike the Dikes – Shorebirds
A partnership between BSBO, Ottawa NWR,
and Magee Marsh Wildlife Area to provide walks into
areas not normally open to the public. Dress for the
weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking. We will
explore late spring critters-frogs, dragonflies,
muskrats, etc. The walk will last around 2 hours.
Meet at 9:00 AM at the Sportsman’s
Migratory Bird Center at Magee Marsh W/A. FREE!
August 15th & 16th - Shorebird Identification Workshop
with KENN KAUFMAN

BSBO is proud to offer this amazing opportunity to learn
from the master! World renowned birding expert Kenn
Kaufman takes us step by step through the process of
identifying these wonders of fall migration. This
workshop is for birders of all skill levels. Friday:
Indoor lecture from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Saturday: Meet
at the Observatory at 8:30 AM for a field trip with Kenn
to put our new skills to the test.
Friday’s workshop will not simply review field marks
listed in all the field guides. Instead, we will focus
on how to look at shorebirds in order to really
understand their identification. We will discuss the
different groups of sandpipers, plovers and their
relatives, considering behavioral clues, shapes, voices,
flight patterns, and more. We will look at the different
plumages of shorebirds, especially the distinctions of
adults and juveniles in fall migration, and other kinds
of variation within each species. On Saturday Kenn will
take us into the field to put our new skills to work
at the best available habitat nearby.
Space is limited in order to assure a quality
experience, so please register early! Registration will
be open to BSBO members FIRST! Workshop fee is $50.00
for BSBO members and $85.00 for nonmembers.
