Fall
Shorebird Identification Workshop Black Swamp Bird Observatory 13551 W. State Route 2
Oak Harbor, Ohio 43449 We are located just inside the entrance to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area BSBO is proud to offer this amazing opportunity to learn from the master! World renowned birding expert Kenn Kaufman takes us step by step through the process of identifying these wonders of fall migration. This workshop is for birders of all skill levels. We begin Friday evening with a 2 hour indoor workshop from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. This illustrated lecture will not simply review field marks listed in all the field guides. Instead, we will focus on how to look at shorebirds in order to really understand their identification. We will discuss the different groups of sandpipers, plovers and their relatives, considering behavioral clues, shapes, voices, flight patterns, and more. We will look at the different plumages of shorebirds, especially the distinctions of adults and juveniles in fall migration, and other kinds of variation within each species. On Saturday we will reconvene at the Observatory at 8:30 AM and Kenn will take us into the field to put our new skills to work at the best available habitat nearby. Kenn has graciously agreed to donate his speaker’s fee – so all proceeds will benefit the Observatory! This is a fabulous opportunity to learn more about identifying shorebirds, spend some time in the field with Kenn, contribute to the Observatory, and have a GREAT time too!
