Interpreting the Maps To view the various distribution maps on the above birds one needs to understand how the maps are laid out . If you are one of the volunteers that collected data, it should not be that difficult to understand. The letters (in sets of A-D) that run vertically on the maps represent the same letters that appear on the pages of the DeLorme Gazetteer. The numbers (in sets of 1-7) are the ones that appear horizontally on the same pages. Please keep in mind that each set of letters (A-D) and numbers (1-7) corresponds to two (2) pages (i.e. pages 24 and 25).
The legend represents the Winter distribution of that species in that particular grid on the map. For example, on the American Crow map follow down on the left side to the 3rd set of letters. In that set follow the letter C across to the 4th set of numbers and stop at the number "2". You would be on page 50 or the corresponding grid would be 50C2. According to the legend the American Crow in that grid was observed in excess of 100 during the period of 2002 thru 2003. I hope this helps in some way to understand what you are looking at on the maps.
