December 2024

Dear Friends,

As a Black Swamp Bird Observatory donor, you are a champion for bird conservation, a steward of biodiversity, and a beacon of hope for future generations. Your continued involvement allows us to expand our reach, deepen our impact, and amplify our voice in advocating for the protection of birds and their habitats. Over the past year, we have witnessed the power of collective action and the impact of our shared efforts to promote bird conservation through research, education, and outreach.

Here are just two examples of what we’ve accomplished this year with your support:
Picture
If you visit Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center in Oregon, Ohio, you might notice that a HUGE expanse of the glass at the resort looks a LOT different from the outside! We are THRILLED to report that the effort spearheaded by the BSBO conservation team to prevent bird collisions at the resort has achieved our goal of adding bird-safe dots to nearly all of the north-facing windows. This huge expanse of glass that had been so dangerous for birds is now much safer. (Only a small section of the treated glass is pictured here.) Plans are in place for the rest of the windows in the lodge to be treated over the next two years.

The BSBO research and education teams brought the joy and wonder of birds to more than 7,000 students in 2024. (And that doesn’t include The Biggest Week!) Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we’re able to offer these programs at no cost to schools. We have plans to expand these programs in 2025.

With your continued support in the coming year, your investment in BSBO will:

Transform Lives Through a Connection with Birds

Your support helps create ambassadors for conservation in every classroom we’re privileged to teach in and every class we bring out to the marsh for hands-on learning with our bird banding research team. BSBO’s education programs cultivate a love for birds, inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity, and instill a sense of responsibility for the natural world in young minds.

Champion Research and Conservation

Your year-end donation supports BSBO’s Navarre Marsh Songbird Banding Research Station, one of the largest research projects of its kind in the country. Our songbird research advances scientific understanding of the needs of migratory birds during their perilous journeys and provides land managers with valuable data that informs decision-making. With your support, BSBO’s conservation team will continue to work tirelessly to address the greatest threats to birds, including window collisions and roaming outdoor cats.

Unite a Global Community

Help us connect and unify bird lovers from around the world during BSBO’s Biggest Week In American Birding, an event that fosters a shared passion for birds and support for bird conservation. Your year-end donation is more than a transaction; it is a renewal of your commitment to research, education, and conservation, a testament to your passion for birds, and a declaration of your belief in
the power of collective action to create positive change in the world.

And thanks to the generous challenge match from Julene Market, Mark & Cheryl Klimek,
and an anonymous donor, your donation will be DOUBLED up to a total of $80,000!

Thank you for your generosity, for sharing the vision, and for helping BSBO be a force for good in the world. We wish you peace and joy in the coming year, and always.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kaufman
Executive Director
