Reflections of the Past
The original logo on the left was designed by Michael Williams in 1992, the year BSBO was founded. We refined the logo a bit in 2015, with finer lines and a lighter font. This logo served us well for more than 30 years, but we all felt that it was time for a change, for a fresh new logo that represented all that BSBO has become. While our core values and commitment to science haven't changed, we wanted a logo that felt welcoming, uplifting, and more inclusive.
Visions for the Future
With the support of a generous donation from BSBO board member Tom Palmer and his wife Susan, the BSBO team was thrilled to work with the incredibly talented team at Madhouse Creative
in Toledo, Ohio to create our new brand. We'd also like to give a major shout-out to BSBO board member Mindy Withrow at Mindy Media (partnerwithmindy.com) for all of her support, guidance,
and expertise.
Over the course of several months, the Madhouse team met with board, staff, volunteers, partners,
and stakeholders to create our fresh, bright, and uplifting new brand.
At a glance, it might seem overly simplified. But a deeper look reveals so much meaning.
Some thoughts:
1) We know you loved the Black-and-white Warbler, and we did too! But, ask yourself: how long does it take for a new birder to recognize a Black-and white Warbler? For many beginners, it takes a long time to see *any* warbler. So, a logo with a bird that most new birders have never seen is like a secret key to an exclusive door that only experienced birders know about. At BSBO we are constantly challenging ourselves to break down any and all barriers for new birders. And we truly believe that the new logo is more welcoming and inclusive.
2) It isn't a recognizable bird
Our new logo isn't *A* bird. It's *ALL* birds. With wings like leaves, a reminder that without habitat, there would be no birds. The wings are also like outstretched arms, welcoming everyone into the birding and conservation community.
3) The logo is moving strongly upward, an indication that birds elevate us, lifting us beyond all barriers and unifying us through our common love of birds.
Thank you for supporting BSBO and helping us grow!
Respectfully,
Kimberly Kaufman
