Golden-winged Warbler Wintering Habitat Restoration Supported by 2014 Biggest Week Carbon Offset Donations
Tremendous things were accomplished with support from the 2014 Biggest Week Carbon Offset donations! The donations helped American Bird Conservancy's (ABC) efforts to restore habitat for Golden-winged Warblers on their wintering grounds in Nicaragua! Here's an update from our friends at ABC. Photo gallery and highlights, below. Read the full story, HERE.
El Jaguar – Yali Biological Corridor, Nicaragua
Progress late summer/fall 2014
With 2014 Biggest Week Carbon Offset donations, the project was able to hire an experienced forest technician (Ingrid Tórrez) to live at the El Jaguar Reserve five days a week, and contribute to managing the native tree nurseries, reforestation efforts, and farmer engagement activities. This increased project capacity has shown immediate results (described below).

- Oversaw 20,000 native saplings produced at 5 project-supported nurseries located throughout the corridor. This will create nearly 90 acres of Golden-winged Warbler habitat.
- 12,000 native trees planted in the corridor by landowners receiving project support, resources, and technical assistance.
- Persuaded two coffee growers’ cooperatives to increase shade cover on their coffee farms.
- Successfully encouraged four landowners to begin the process of declaring some or all of their farms as official, government registered Private Nature Preserves.
These will be the first Private Nature Reserves in the corridor to be established as a direct result of project efforts.
