Join the BSBO staff for an afternoon of wintering birding in northwest Ohio! We’ll meet at the Trautman Nature Center at Maumee Bay State Park and then head off to the beach in search of Snow Buntings and wintering gulls, and cross our fingers for a Snowy Owl. We’ll then make our way over to the Maumee Bay Campground in search of roosting Northern Saw-whet Owls. With numerous conifers and ornamental shrubs, the Maumee Bay Campground can host a number of owls and raptors, and a plethora of songbirds feeding on fallen seed and lingering fruit.

If time allows, we’ll caravan over to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in hopes of spotting a cooperative Northern Shrike and Northern Harriers along the causeway. To wrap up the birding portion of the day, we’ll finish off at Howard Marsh near sunset, just as Short-eared Owls come out to hunt.

Following our birding adventures, an optional checklist tally of the day will be held at Blackberry Corners where we can all warm up, have dinner, and maybe have some lifer pie!
