Building Collision Study
Black Swamp Bird Observatory was asked to collaborate with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History on a project “studying post window collision survival and behavior” in 2019. This project will continue through at least 2022, and to date, BSBO has been able to tag 38 birds with species including American Woodcock, Wood Thrush, Gray Catbird, White-throated Sparrow, Ovenbird, and Magnolia Warbler.
BSBO - along with Powdermill Avian Research Center, Erie Bird Observatory, and Chester River Field Station - serves as a control group, capturing and nano-tagging normal wild birds of target species in order to compare stopover length, migratory departure, and post-departure migratory movements to rehabbed collision survival birds collected through collision monitoring programs including BirdSafe Pittsburgh, Lights Out Cleveland, Lights Out Columbus, Lights Out Baltimore, and Lights Out DC. These movements are being tracked by our local Motus receiving network and the Motus Network at large.
