On Sunday, September 24, a bright and beautiful day during fall migration, Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) hosted a celebration to honor the volunteer team that makes all of our work possible.
We began with a morning field trip to fabulous Howard Marsh Metropark, where the group was treated to wonderful looks at Red Knots, Wilson's Snipe, and Black-bellied Plovers. Snowy Egret and Blue-winged Teal added to the beauty of the morning.
After the field trip, we gathered for lunch at Maumee Bay Lodge in a spot overlooking beautiful Lake Erie. (The sunlight casting a rainbow on the fountain on the inland lake was a lovely touch!)
All volunteers were honored and celebrated with gift bags, t-shirts, and messages of gratitude from the BSBO staff and board. But we offer special congratulations to BSBO Board Treasurer, Michelle Klement, and Volunteer Building Projects Manager, Jack Laverty. Michelle and Jack received BSBO's prestigious Volunteer of the Year award honoring their dedication and exemplary service to BSBO's mission. We also presented BSBO's Conservation Service Award. We're not going to reveal the recipient's name yet, because they still don't know they won the award!
We extend our sincere gratitude to all of the volunteers who were unable to attend yesterday's celebration. Your tremendous contribution of time and talent to BSBO's mission is so greatly valued and appreciated.
